OSWEGO, NY – Hartwick was defeated by Oswego State (3-3) on the road in men's tennis on Wednesday by a final count of 7-2. In addition to the two wins, the Hawks also played several close matches on the day.
At number one doubles, the duo of
John Talbot (Middlesex, NY/Marcus Whitman) and
Krishna Patel (Brunswick, ME/Pine Tree Academy) played a tight match against Oswego's John Stanford and Jon Matros. The Hawks would be edged out by a final score of 8-6.
The Lakers would take a 3-0 advantage into the singles portion.
Heidi Rice (Canandaigua, NY/Marcus Whitman) took six games at the number five flight against Nick Retzkin in a 6-2, 6-4 contest.
Quinn McQuade (Oyster Bay, NY/Chaminade) won four games in sixth singles and
Ross Braue (Canstota, NY/Canastota) earned three games at the fourth spot.
Nick Adamou (New Milford, CT/New Milford) played a solid match in the third flight. After falling in the first set to Chris Gayvert, 6-4, Adamou forced a tie breaker in the second set. He would come up just a few points short, falling 6-4, 7-6 (7-5).
Talbot and Patel came away with the victories for the Hawks at the top two flights, respectively. Talbot defeated Stanford with ease at the number one spot, 6-1, 6-2. Patel needed three sets against Matros in second singles. He took the first set 6-4 before Matros evened the score with a 6-1 triumph in the second set. Patel came through in the third for the victory, 10-6.
The Hawks (0-2) are now off for over two weeks until they get back to Empire 8 Conference play on April 7. Hartwick hosts Ithaca in its home opener beginning at 4 p.m.
