PROVIDENCE, RI – Hartwick water polo swept St. Francis (PA) and #20 Harvard on Friday at Brown University's Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center in Providence, RI to reach the 20-win mark for the season. The Hawks are now 20-9 overall and 4-2 in CWPA play with one day remaining on the regular season schedule.
The Hawks' opener against the Red Flash, 'Wick scored the first eight goals of the game and cruised to the 9-4 victory.
Lena Kotanchyan (Moscow, Russia / Elk Island School #368) would score three of the Hawks' first four goals of the first quarter.
Charlotte Cottle (Blakehurst, Australia / Presbyterian Ladies College) and
Zsofia Polak (Dunaujvaros, Hungary / Rudas HS) registered the other Hartwick tallies in a five-goal first quarter.
Tori Wilson (Kitchener, ONT / Grand River Collegiate Institute) found the net 5:12 into the second quarter.
Maria Moya (Madrid, Spain / Ortega Y Gasset), closed out the scoring with 32 ticks to play as Hartwick led 7-0 at halftime.
Kotanchyan's fourth goal of the game after 1:07 of the third made it an 8-0 margin. St. Francis finally got on the scoresheet with 3:53 left before
Sarah Lewis (La Jolla, CA / Cathedral Catholic HS), answered for Hartwick for the team's final goal of the day. The Red Flash scored all three goals of the fourth quarter.
Freshman
Emma Aleksandrovic (Belgrade, Serbia / Medicine School Zvezdara) made nine saves in two quarters in cage. Sophomore
Sabrina Hartwell (Ann Arbor, MI / Skyline HS) stopped eight shots in the other two periods.
Against Harvard, the Hawks led for much of the game before the Crimson evened the score at 9-9 in the third quarter. The score was 10-10 in the final quarter, but Wilson and Kotanchyan goals 1:22 apart made it 12-10. Harvard inched closer but could not find the tying goal.
Cottle scored twice in the first quarter with Wilson,
Katie McKenty (Auckland, New Zealand / Takapuna Grammar School) and Polak also tallying as Hartwick led 5-3 after the first eight minutes.
Nikolina Mihajlovik (Mississauga, ONT / Silverthorn Collegiate Inst.), Kotanchyan, and Polak scored the goals in the second quarter as Hartwick led by at least two throughout. The Hawks made it 9-6 on a Polak goal early in the third and had a chance to extend it to four but couldn't convert. Harvard then answered with three straight tallies to tie the game. Polak's fourth goal put 'Wick ahead by one heading into the final quarter.
After 17 seconds, the Crimson evened the score at 10-all before Wilson and Kotanchyan put it away for 'Wick. Polak and McKenty each dished out three assists for the Hawks.
Josette Santos (Huntington Beach, CA / Edison HS) made seven saves in goal.
Polak went over the 250-goal mark for her career in the contest. She now ranks fourth in the Hartwick record books with 251 tallies.
Hartwick closes out the CWPA and regular season schedule tomorrow. The Hawks play host Brown and #14 Indiana. Two wins and the Hawks would nail down the third seed in the upcoming conference playoffs.
