ALFRED, NY – The Hartwick men's tennis team fell 7-2 to Alfred Saturday afternoon at William T. Brown Tennis Courts. The Hawks are now 1-7 and 0-5 in the Empire 8. The Saxons improve to 4-7 and 2-4 in conference play.
Though Alfred took all three doubles' points, Hartwick came within two at both No. 2 and No. 3. The 'Wick duo of
Nick Adamou (New Milford, CT/New Milford) and
Ross Braue (Canastota, NY/Canastota) fell at the second flight, 8-4, as the first pair to end.
At the third flight,
Drew Tyrol (Old Lyme, CT/Lyme-Old Lyme) and
Quinn McQuade (Oyster Bay, NY/Chaminade) finished second behind an 8-6 score before
John Talbot (Middlesex, NY/Marcus Whitman) and
Krishna Patel (Brunswick, ME/Pine Tree Academy) wrapped things up at the top flight, 8-4.
Talbot's 6-0, 6-4 win at no. 1 singles made way for Hartwick's first point of the afternoon.
Braue at No. 4, Patel at No. 2, Adamou at No. 3 and Tyrol at No. 5 could not get past their respective opponents as the Saxons widened their margin, 7-1.
The Hawks did end on a high note with McQuade coming away with a three-set win at No. 6. He took the first set, 6-5, but stumbled in the second, 6-0. Winning the tiebreaker by three, McQuade awarded the Hawks one more point and settled the 7-2 final.
Men's tennis resumes action on Monday, April 24 with a match at local rival Oneonta. The first serve goes up at 4 p.m.
