BLOOMINGTON, IN – Tori Wilson (Kitchener, ONT / Grand River Collegiate Institute),
Zsofia Polak (Dunaujvaros, Hungary / Rudas HS), and
Lena Kotanchyan (Moscow, Russia / Elk Island School #368) provided all the scoring as Hartwick water polo defeated Harvard 10-7 on Sunday in the CWPA third-place game at Indiana University's Councilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center.
Wilson registered a game-high four goals with one assist. Polak and Kotanchyan contributed three goals apiece. Polak also dished out two assists with Kotanchyan contributing one.
Wilson and Kotanchyan scored first-quarter goals but the Crimson got a late tally with 14 seconds left to draw even at the end of the first quarter, 2-2. The Hawks would break the game open in the second, out-scoring Harvard 5-2 in the period. Wilson and Polak scored in the opening 1:30 of the quarter. After the Crimson got one back, three straight goals in a 1:42 span gave the Hawks a 7-3 advantage. Polak registered a pair in the spurt with Wilson adding one tally.
Harvard scored late in the second quarter and early in the third to make it a 7-5 game. Wilson netted her fourth goal of the game later in the quarter and Harvard answered less than a minute later to trim the gap to two, 8-6, heading into the fourth.
Seventeen seconds into the final period, the Crimson pulled within a goal. Kotanchyan gave the Hawks some breathing room at the six-minute mark. She put the game away with her second of the quarter with 51 seconds left on the clock.
Natalie May (Huntington Beach, CA / Edison HS) and
Charlotte Cottle (Blakehurst, Australia / Presbyterian Ladies College) each had assists in the game. Cottle also collected four steals.
Polak was named Player of the Game at the conclusion of the contest marking the second time in three games she earned the honor. She had 10 goals on the weekend. She joined Kotanchyan on the All-Tournament First Team. Kotanchyan was also named Rookie of the Tournament.
Josette Santos (Huntington Beach, CA / Edison HS) registered nine saves in the contest.
Hartwick finishes third for the second time in three years at the championships. The Hawks end their season with a record of 24-10 marking the fifteenth time in 16 seasons the program has reached the 20-win mark.
