Water Polo Falls From Unbeaten Ranks in CWPA With 16-10 Loss to #7 Michigan

ONEONTA, NY – Visiting Michigan grabbed a lead late in the first quarter and didn't allow Hartwick to get within two goals from the second quarter on in a CWPA battle at Moyer Pool Saturday. The Wolverines would top the Hawks by a final score of 16-10.
           
The loss is Hartwick's first in CWPA play. The team falls to 18-8 overall and 2-1 in the league. Michigan improves to 24-8 and 7-0 in the CWPA.
           
Zsofia Polak (Dunaujvaros, Hungary / Rudas HS) tied for a game-high with four goals. Lena Kotanchyan (Moscow, Russia / Elk Island School #368) added three for the Hawks.
           
The two teams traded a pair of goals each in the opening 2:20 of the game. Polak and Lauren Brennan (Canberra, Australia/St. Clares College) registered the Hawks' tallies as the score was tied at 2-2 through the midway point of the quarter. Maddy Steeve and Danielle Johnson came back with consecutive goals in a 42-second span and UM led 4-2 after one period of play.
           
Allison Skaggs and Sellers upped the margin to four with early second-quarter goals and the visitors led by a count of 6-2. Steeve tallied again in between a pair of Kotanchyan tallies to make it a 7-4 game. Skaggs and Charlotte Cottle (Blakehurst, Australia / Presbyterian Ladies College) closed out the first-half scoring in the final 1:35 with UM leading 8-5.
           
Hartwick pulled within two twice in the third quarter. Kotanchyan made it 8-6 at the 6:46 mark and Polak's second goal cut the Michigan lead to 9-7 at 4:09. The Wolverines would surge ahead with three unanswered goals in the final 3:37 as they grabbed a 12-7 advantage after three quarters of play.
           
Tori Wilson (Kitchener, ONT / Grand River Collegiate Institute) and Polak each scored to trim the Hartwick deficit to four in the fourth period. Michigan put the game away with three goals later in the quarter.
           
Josette Santos (Huntington Beach, CA / Edison HS) played in goal for the Hawks. She would record 11 saves in the contest.
           
Sellers paced Michigan with four scores. Skaggs and Delaney Cleveland contributed a trio of goals each.
           
Hartwick, which is ranked seventeenth in the nation, will close out the weekend on Sunday against #10 Princeton beginning at 3 p.m.
