TROY, NY – In its first ever match as league opponents, the Hartwick women's tennis team was edged 5-4 by Sage, Tuesday afternoon at Prospect Park. The loss puts the Hawks at 4-3 and 2-2 in Empire 8 action while the Gators are 6-1 and 3-1 in conference play.
At no. 1 doubles,
Heidi Rice (Canandaigua, NY/Marcus Whitman) and
Kelli Ryan (Plattsburgh, NY/Seton Catholic) made easy work of their opponents playing aggressively. Ryan used her backhand return effectively as Rice's prowess from the baseline was immediately felt in the 8-1 victory to begin the afternoon.
Heading into singles' play down two, the Hawks totaled three singles' wins to the credit of Rice at no. 1,
Kelly Napolitano (Mt. Sinai, NY/Mt. Sinai) at no. 2 and Ryan at no. 3 but not until Sage had already credited the insurmountable advantage.
Hatwick looks to get back to its winning ways, Saturday, September 23 when they visit St. John Fisher. The Hawks and Cardinals square off at 1 p.m.
