ANN ARBOR, MI – Nationally thirteenth-ranked Hartwick dropped a pair of games to close out the final day at the Michigan Invite at Donald B. Canham Natatorium in Ann Arbor, MI Sunday. 'Wick lost a 19-9 exhibition match early this morning to the Chinese National Team. The Hawks then came up short against No. 20 Wagner College, 16-14, in their second game.
In the opener, the Hawks kept the tally even through the first quarter, 3-3. The Chinese team then out-scored 'Wick in the second quarter by a 7-2 margin and built upon its lead in the closing two quarters for a ten-goal victory.
Lena Kotanchyan (Moscow, Russia/Elk Island School),
Nikolina Mihajlovik (Mississauga, ONT/Silverthorn Collegiate Institute), and
Maryanna Antoniou (Glyfada, Greece/Second General) each scored a pair goals for the Hawks.
Becca Lelles (Boulder City, NV/Boulder City),
Hayley Hill (Fort Lauderdale, FL/Fort Lauderdale), and
Lissa Westerman (Newport Beach, CA/Newport Harbor) all scored a goal apiece in the match.
Against Wagner, the Hawks led 10-7 in the second quarter, but the Seahawks scored seven of the next eight goals to build a three-point, 14-11 cushion. They would lead 15-12 heading into the fourth quarter. The Hawks trimmed the gap to one with 1:40 remaining but the Seahawks tallied with under a minute left for the final goal of the game.
Tori Wilson (Kitchener, ONT/Grand River Collegiate Institute) scored four goals to lead the Hawks scoring.
Zsofia Polak (Dunaujvaros, Hungary/Rudas) and Kotanchyan were not far behind scoring three goals each.
Mihajlovik scored a pair of goals as she did in the first game.
L.J. Edwards (Encinitas, CA/Cathedral Catholic) and
Lauren Brennan (Canberra, Australia/St. Clares College) both scored goals to round out the Hawks' scoring in the second game.
Hartwick will be in action next weekend, February 3
rd and 4
th, at the Brown Invite hosted by Brown University in Providence, RI. Their first match will kick off at 12:40 p.m. against Villanova University.
