PROVIDENCE RI – Hartwick won a trio of games on the first day of the Brown Invite at Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center in Providence, RI Sunday. 'Wick won its first game 18-10 against Villanova University. The Hawks then won their second match against Iona College 15-8. Finally, the Hawks won their third contest of the day against California Baptist University 15-8.
The Hawks jumped out to a 6-1 lead after the first quarter in their first game. The Wildcats held their own in the next two periods but were unable to cut into the early deficit. The Hawks cruised to an 8 point victory.
Tori Wilson (Kitchener, ON / Grand River Collegiate Institute),
Zsofia Polak (Dunaujvaros, Hungary / Rudas), and
Madison Germuska (Encinitas, CA/La Costa Canyon H.S.) each scored a trio of goals in the h Hawk win.
Lena Kotanchyan (Moscow, Russia / Elk Island School) and
Katie McKenty (Aukland, New Zealand/Takapuna Grammar School) each scored two goals apiece for the match. Five other Hawks including
Sarah Lewis (La Jolla, CA/Cathedral H.S.),
Charlotte Cottle (Sydey, Australia/Presbyterian Ladies College),
Maria Moya (Madrid, Spain/Ortega Y Gasset), and
Gina Grauer (West Lawn, PA/Wilson H.S.) all scored lone goals in the Hawks win.
In the second game against Iona, the Hawks again climbed out to an early 4-1 lead. The Gaels broke even in the second but 'Wick's 4-1 margin in the third gave the Hawks a six -point lead going into the fourth quarter. The Hawk' lead proved too much for the Gaels to overcome in the end and Hawks would win their second straight match.
Lauren Brennan (Canbarra, Australia/St. Clares College), Wilson, and
L.J. Edwards (Encinitas, CA Cathedral Catholic) each scored a trio. Wilson scored three goals in the first game against Villanova as well. Polak scored a pair of goals in the winning effort. McKenty, Grauer, and
Nikolina Mihajlovik (Mississauga, ON / Silverthorn Collegiate Institute) each scored a goal in the second match.
In the third game against California Baptist University, the Hawks would once against come away with the win. The game stayed close for first quarter with 'Wick holding a slight 3-2 edge over the Lancers. The Hawks tallied five goals to the Lancers' two in the second to grow their lead to four at the half. 'Wick continued to outscore the Lancer in the second half and win by seven,
Kotanchyan scored an impressive five goals against California Baptist University to lead the Hawks' scoring effort in the third game. Brennan scored her second trio of goals on the day having scored three in the second game as well. Cottle, Polak, and Wilson each scored a pair and Mihajlovik scored a lone goal to round out the Hawks scoring on the day.
Hartwick will be in action tomorrow, February 4
th, to close out the Brown Invite. Their first match will commence at 9:45 a.m. against No. 13 San Diego State. Their second match will be an exhibition against McKendree University at 12:15 p.m.
