ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick water polo had its three-game winning streak snapped on Sunday morning as the No. 13 Hawks fell to No. 9 Michigan at Moyer Pool by a final score of 14-7. The Hawks are now 16-4 overall. The Wolverines are 18-7.
Michigan controlled the first quarter scoring four unanswered goals in the opening 6:12 of action.
Lena Kotanchyan (Moscow, Russia / Elk Island School) got the Hawks on the scoreboard at the 1:26 mark before UM made it a 5-1 game after eight minutes.
The Wolverines' advantage grew to seven as they scored a trio of goals in a 2:01 span of the second quarter for an 8-1 lead. 'Wick would cut the gap to five at the half as
Katie McKenty (Auckland, New Zealand / Takapuna Grammar School) and
Tori Wilson (Kitchener, ONT / Grand River Collegiate Institute) scored consecutive goals to close the quarter.
The Hawks continued to inch closer in the third quarter as Wilson scored after 12 seconds. She added her third tally of the game 41 ticks later and 'Wick trailed by just three, 8-5. Michigan would net the next two goals near the midway point of the quarter. Kotanchyan answered for Hartwick with a goal with 2:45 left, but the Wolverines came back with a goal with under a minute to play to take an 11-6 lead into the final quarter.
Three straight UM goals in a 1:52 span of the fourth would put the game out of reach.
Lauren Brennan (Canberra, Australia / St. Clares College) capped the day's scoring with 10 seconds to go in the contest.
Becca Lelles (Boulder City, NV / Boulder City H.S.) led the Hawks with three assists on the day. Kotanchyan and McKenty also dished out assists.
Hannah Edwards (Encinitas, CA / Cathedral Catholic) made six saves in goal for the Hawks.
Josette Santos (Huntington Beach, NY / Edison HS) played in the second quarter and stopped two shots.
UM received three goals apiece from Christina O'Beck and Maddy Johnston. Caroline Anderson, Kathy Rogers, Kim Johnson, and Julia Sellers each chipped in two goals.
The Hawks and Wolverines will meet again on Saturday, April 14 at Canham Natatorium in Ann Arbor in the CWPA regular season finale.
