Hartwick Holds Intercollegiate Athletic Awards Ceremony

ONEONTA, NY – Senior water polo utility Zsofia Polak (Dunaujvaros, Hungary) and senior men's lacrosse midfielder Eric Schweitzer (Babylon, NY) headlined the Hartwick College Intercollegiate Athletics Awards Ceremony, held in the Binder Physical Education Center's Lambros Arena, on Thursday evening.

Polak received the Anna Meyer Female Athlete of the Year Award for the third consecutive year. Schweitzer was crowned the winner of the Roy Chipman Memorial Award for Male Athlete of the Year.
Polak earned CWPA First Team and the CWPA All-Tournament First Team honors for the third straight season while helping Hartwick water polo to a third-place finish at the conference championships for the third time in four seasons. She led the Hawks with 181 points and 72 assists this season, became the program's all-time leading goal scorer (375), and became just the second player in program history to reach 600 points.
           
Schweitzer earned Empire 8 All-Conference honors for the second straight year while helping the Hawks to their second consecutive playoff appearance. He tied for the league lead in caused turnovers per game (2.79) and ranked in the top five in ground balls per game (6.29) and finishes his two seasons with the Hawks with 181 ground balls and 75 caused turnovers.
           
Field hockey forward Claudia Stone (Akron, NY) and senior swimmer Joey Moffitt (Tunkhannock, PA) captured the Margaret Lunn Memorial and the Harry Mosher Memorial Awards, respectively, which are handed out to members of the senior class. Stone was named the Lunn recipient for exemplifying athletic ability, leadership and sportsmanship, while Moffitt was honored with the Mosher for personifying courage, desire, humility and unselfish devotion to his team.
           
Stone received Empire 8 All-Conference accolades for the third time in her career after leading her team in goals (9), points (25), and tying for a team-best with seven assists. Within the E8, Stone tied for third in assists, tied for seventh in goals, and was eighth in points. She finished her career with 18 goals and 12 assists for 48 points in 52 contests.
           
Moffitt, a two-year captain of the men's swimming and diving team, was named to the Empire 8 Sportsman of the Year Team. At the league championships, he placed fifth and eighth in the 200 and 100 breaststroke, respectively, and ranks in the program's all-time top 10 in both events.
           
Women's soccer's Courtney Velho (Derry, NH) was the winner of the Brunhilde Klinger Memorial Award for Most Outstanding Female Freshman Athlete. She was the Empire 8 Co-Rookie of the Year and a First Team all-star, helping her team to its first conference title in 2017. Velho helped lead a Hartwick defense that surrendered only 10 goals in 20 games, shutout a program-record 13 opponents, and blanked its last nine conference opponents.
           
Kevin Townes (Lagrangeville, NY) was honored as the recipient of the Tim O'Brien Memorial Award for Outstanding Male Freshman Athlete. He was named both the D3hoops.com East Region and Empire 8 Conference Rookie of the Year after leading his team in both scoring (16.7 ppg) and rebounding (6.7 rpg).   He ranked fourth in scoring, was tied for fourth in three-pointers per game, and seventh in rebounding in the E8.
           
Men's sophomore cross country runner Joseph Ziegler III (Chicago, IL) was chosen as the winner of the LeRoy House Jr. Memorial Award, which is presented to the student connected with the athletic department who has exceptional enthusiasm and dedication to Hartwick Athletics, for the second straight year. The recipient of this particular award has also displayed service to the Hartwick community in some capacity outside athletics.
           
Junior women's soccer player Madison Miller (Oneonta, NY) and sophomore swimmer Hunter McRee (Doylestown, PA) were chosen as the winners of the M. Beal Banks Award, which is presented to individuals who have best pursued excellence in their sport to the best of their ability and have enthused others with their dedication and commitment.
           
Women's soccer's Allie Ricci (Millstone, NJ) and men's tennis' John Talbot (Middlesex, NY) were presented with the Frederick M. Binder Scholar Athlete Award, which goes to the senior male and female athletes who have played a varsity sport at least two years and have achieved at least a 3.25 grade point average.
