Cross Country Posts Strong Regular Season Finish at Western New England Invitational

SPRINGFIELD, MASS. - The cross country teams concluded their regular season with a solid performance at the Western New England Invitational.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The women's 6k kicked off a nice day at the Western New England Invitational, with Brynita Haas (Red Creek, N.Y.) again leading the pack for the Hawks and clocking in at a solid 27 minutes and 48 seconds. Only one runner and two seconds behind Haas was first-year Emilia Murphy (Amsterdam, N.Y.) to snag a personal best. Julia Weinschreider (Williamson, N.Y.) and Addison Shank crossed the finish line only a few seconds later to take 81st and 82nd place out of 175 runners. Another standout for the day would be Keziah Anderson (Rock Island, Ill.), who would record a personal best in the 6k.

The men's cross country 8k started off directly after the women's race concluded, with Erik Higgins (Buffalo, N.Y.) running a tremendous race to take 78th place out of 215 runners and recording his first sub-30 time of the 2025 season. Avery Lungstrom (Bel Air, Md.) was not far behind, clocking in at 29 minutes and 56 seconds, also running a stellar sub-30 race. Close behind was Devon Spalding (Mineola, N.Y.), who recorded a new season-best with ten seconds off his prior best.

Overall, the women's team would stand out with a 12th place finish in team scoring out of 22 competing teams, while the men's team placed 15th out of 19 teams.

Results from the day can be found here.

COMMENTS FROM HEAD COACH NATE CREWS

"We split the women into pairs today with some of the more experienced athletes pacing some of their younger teammates to certain goals to instill some confidence moving into championship season. With that, we saw some solid results: Murphy and Anderson set personal bests as well as Shank running over a minute season-best. I think with what the women showed today, championship season will hold some fantastic performances. The men's goal was to run in a pack until about the 4 mile mark. This led to Lungstrom running sub-30 the second time this year followed by Erik Higgins to his first sub-30 of the year. Spalding managed to shave another ten seconds off his season best. I think after seeing what the men had today we could see a large portion of our scoring positions running under the 30 minute mark."

UP NEXT FOR THE HAWKS

The Hawks will look to the postseason as they are set to compete in the Empire 8 Cross Country Championships hosted by St. John Fisher University on Saturday, November 1st at 11 AM.
