Box Score ALBANY, NY – Pat Garey's (Johnson City, NY/Johnson City) three with under a second left lifted Hartwick's men's basketball team to an 86-84 come from behind overtime victory Monday night at the Kahl Center in Albany.
The Hawks trailed by as many as four in the extra session but a three from
Kyle Bradshaw (Tinton Falls, NJ/Brookdale CC) and a bucket from
Tommy Kelly (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) gave 'Wick the lead with 21 seconds to play. After a Gator basket with seven ticks left,
Brandon LaForest (Cohoes, NY/Cohoes) dished out his 468
th assist for Garey in the corner for the winner.
With the victory, the Hawks close out their season with a record of 10-15 overall and 6-10 in the Empire 8.
Garey and Bradshaw were the stars as they combined for 35 points on the night. Garey erupted for 30 points on 11-of-20 shooting which included seven bombs from downtown. Bradshaw contributed a double-double with 22 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
After some back and forth in the early minutes, a layup from
Bobby Connors (Rockville Centre, NY/Chaminade) at 14:31 of the first half, gave Hartwick a lead it would not relinquish until the last minute of the second half.
The Hawks would lead by as many as 11 in the first half before setting on a 42-34 edge at the break.
The Hawks maintained their double-digit advantage for the first eight minutes of the second half. The Gators trimmed the gap to six four times in the next four minutes and made it four with under seven minutes to play. The Hawks built the lead back up with a 9-3 run to cut the lead to just one with 30 seconds left. After a Garey free throw, Sage converted a basket with 15 ticks left. The Hawks had one last try but they were unsuccessful forcing overtime.
The Gators got the first two baskets in overtime to take an 82-78 lead with under three minutes left. Bradshaw answered with a trey and after multiple possessions by both teams, Kelly hit a J with 21 seconds left setting the stage for Garey's game-winner.
Justin Carruthers (Greenwich, NY/Greenwich), in his final game as a Hawk, registered nine points and seven rebounds.
Tommy Kelly (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) had nine points and he dished out a team-high seven assists. Connors finished with nine boards.
The Hawks hit just under 40% (31-for-78) from the field. They knocked down 14 three-pointers in the game and they out-rebounded the Gators, 48-44.
LaForest ends his career as one of Hartwick's best. He leaves the program, 13
th in scoring with 1,330 points. He is also 5
th in three-pointers made with 190 and assists (468), and 6
th in steals (123).
