On This Day (11/10/07): Football Wins Empire 8 Title With Historic Win Over Utica

On this day in 2007 the Hartwick football team outlasted Utica, 72-70, in what was then the highest-scoring game in NCAA history. The victory earned the Hawks a share of the Empire 8 title as well as their first ever berth to the NCAA Division III playoffs.

The Hawks trailed 21-7 in the second quarter, but a pair of rushes later in the period, including a QB sneak from Jason Boltus (pictured), knotted the game at the half.

It seemed at times that 'Wick might run away with it in the second half, leading by as much as 14, but the Pioneers eventually tied the game with just 17 seconds to go.

The teams alternated scoring in the first three overtimes. In the fourth, Boltus found WR Jack Phelan for a 70-64 lead, and then ran the ball in for two points. Utica also scored a touchdown on their possession, but could not convert to force a fifth overtime.

The Hawks generated 546 yards of offense in the win. Boltus threw for 420 yards and six touchdowns, while Phelan caught 11 passes for 240 yards and four touchdowns.
