’Wick Field Hockey Stops W&J 3-1

WASHINGTON, PA – Hartwick (8-3, 3-0 E8) led from start to finish in a 3-1 victory over Washington & Jefferson on Saturday in a battle of Empire 8 heavyweights. The Hawks, who won their fifth straight, stay unbeaten in the Empire 8 with a 3-0 record and down the Presidents for the first time in six tries.
Freshman Kelsey Kimble (Dingmans Ferry, PA/Delaware Valley) and junior Jen Kaye (Altamont, NY/Guilderland) combined for Hartwick's first goal just under seven minutes into the match. Kimble received a pass from Kaye and beat W&J keeper Shelby Colyer for her fifth goal of the season.
Brittany Baughman (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) then got into the scoring act just before halftime to give the Hawks some breathing room on a nice individual effort. The sophomore broke up the sideline and beat several Presidents before finishing for her second tally of the year.
The Hawks held a slim 5-4 edge in shots in the half. The Presidents took the only two penalty corners of the opening period.
The game stayed 2-0 until the very late stages of the match when W&J broke through the Hawks' defense with under five minutes remaining. Hannah Lott scored the goal with Kolbey Seidel picking up the assist to cut the Hartwick lead in half, but in the final minute Amanda Barton (Endwell, NY/Greene) set up teammate Samantha Galm (Kingston, NY/Kingston) for her fifth tally of the year following a penalty corner to seal the win for the Hawks.
W&J would end the game holding advantages in shots (14-9) and penalty corners (8-4), but it would not be enough as a determined Hawks' side avenged losses to the Presidents in each of the last five meetings since 2006. Mackenzie Chapman (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) made 10 saves, including seven in the second half to help 'Wick to the win. Colyer stopped five shots.
The Hawks, who will be in search of consecutive win number six, take a break from Empire 8 play on Tuesday as they travel to Union for a 7 p.m. non-conference match.
