Red Dragons Overtake Hawks in Overtime

ONEONTA, NY – Ainsley Stoll's second goal of the game 8:41 into the second overtime lifted Oneonta State to a come-from-behind win over Hartwick on Tuesday night in field hockey. The win evens the Red Dragons' record at 8-8. The loss for the Hawks is their second straight in overtime and drops their overall season mark to 9-5.
Stoll's game-winning tally came on a blast from inside the circle that eluded reigning Empire 8 Goalie of the Week and ECAC Mid-Atlantic Defensive Player of the Week, Mackenzie Chapman (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna). The goal broke a scoreless streak in the game that had stretched to just under 53 minutes.
Hartwick took the lead in the match after 12:26 when freshman Kelsey Kimble (Dingmans Ferry, PA/Delaware Valley) scored for the fifth time in the last seven matches. Jen Kaye (Altamont, NY/Guilderland) earned her team-best fifth assist on the play.
Oneonta's Kim Solazzo tied the score 7:59 after Kimble's marker and the game remained 1-1 heading into halftime. Oneonta outshot the Hawks 7-5 in the period.
Hartwick gained the upper hand once again 1:52 into the second half as Brittany Baughman (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) finished off a scramble in front following a save from Oneonta keeper Leslie Dauphinais off a Kimble shot. It was Baughman's third tally of the year.
The Hartwick advantage was short-lived, however, as Stoll scored her first of the night at the 5:46 mark of the second half. Her tally came about following cross into the circle from teammate Ashley Johnson.
The game stayed 2-2 for the next 30 minutes to force overtime. 'Wick would outshoot the Red Dragons 4-2 in the extra periods. Kimble had a shot stopped by Dauphinais and Morgan Cestari (Lake Grove, NY/Centerreach) put another shot wide for the Hawks in the first overtime. Four minutes into the second extra period, Kimble had another effort blocked and Dauphinais kept out a Jenny Murphy (Vineyard Haven, MA/Martha's Vineyard) shot prior to Stoll's game-winner.
The Dragons edged the Hawks in both shots (16-15) and penalty corners (12-11) on the night. Dauphinais closed the match with six stops. Chapman stopped three Oneonta shots.
The Hawks will look to snap their two-game slide on Saturday in their final home Empire 8 match of the season. The team entertains Utica at 1 p.m. at Wright Stadium.
