Big Second Half Propels Springfield Past Hartwick

ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick scored first, but Springfield scored the final 35 points, including 28 in the second half to earn a 35-7 victory Saturday at Wright Stadium. The Pride, which rushed for 363 yards on the day, improves to 6-1 overall and 2-1 in the Empire 8. Hartwick falls to 4-3 and 0-3 in conference play.
Hartwick struck first on its second possession of the game. A Brian Radley (Herkimer, NY/Dolgeville) 9-yard touchdown pass to classmate Keith Geraldsen (Ravena, NY/Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk) capped a 15-play, 74-yard drive and after a Heath Dunn (Mechanicville, NY/Mechanicville) extra point, the Hawks were up 7-0.
Springfield came right back on their next possession. Joe Myhren finished off the drive on a six-yard run to tie the score at 7-7 with two minutes left in the first quarter. The score would remain tied through the second quarter. Hartwick had a great opportunity late in the second session as the arm of Radley and the legs of running back Tosh DeMulder (Unadilla, NY/Unatego) drove the Blue and White 71 yards in 11 plays to the Springfield 12 yard-line. The Hawks would come up empty, however, as Radley was picked off in the end zone by freshman Niall Murphy for his first of two interceptions in the game.
The Pride got the ball in the second half and marched 72 yards for the go-ahead score. Running back Baldwin Cunningham, who accumulated a team-high 113 yards on the ground, had a big 31-yard run to highlight the drive. Quarterback Josh Carter's two-yard keeper put the Pride up for good.
The Hawks missed another opportunity to put points on the board on the ensuing possession. DeMulder broke free for a big 39-yard run and he looked destined to find the end zone, but a big tackle by Jarred Burrell at the 2 yard-line kept him out. The Pride defense stuffed the Hawks on the next two goal-line plays and an incomplete pass brought up 4th and 2. Dunn came on to kick the field goal but missed from 19 yards away.
Springfield made the Hawks pay with a back-breaking 14-play, 78-yard drive to extend the lead to 14 points. Carter, Cunningham, Myhren, Mitchell Davis, and Alex Mendez racked up all the yardage on the ground with Carter finishing it off with a 3-yard touchdown scamper.
A Hartwick interception closed out the third quarter and the Pride would turn it into another seven points early in the fourth on a Mendez 1-yard touchdown run. The Hawks couldn't generate any offense on their next two possessions and Cunningham ended the scoring with a 27-yard touchdown run with less than six minutes to go.
DeMulder finished with 158 yards on the ground to lead all rushers. He also jumped into third all-time in career rushing yards at Hartwick in the game. Radley threw for 137 yards on 13-of-35 passing. Noah Koreman (Albany, NY/Albany) led 'Wick in receiving yards with 72 on five catches.
Defensively, Rob Roth (Cornwall, NY/Cornwall), Chad Rockefeller (Delhi, NY/Delaware Academy), Jordan Spirou (Westbury, NY), Ben Tomaino (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta), and P.J. Prunty (Danbury, CT/Danbury) each recorded double-digit tackles. Roth notched 14, including seven solo hits, Rockefeller added 13, followed by Spirou's 12, Tomaino's 11, and Prunty's 10.
The Hawks next play at Utica College on Oct. 31. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
