Field Hockey Cruises into ECAC Title Game With 4-0 Shutout of Alvernia

MONTCLAIR, NJ – Junior Jen Kaye (Altamont, NY/Guilderland) and sophomore Brittany Baughman (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) each scored twice and registered an assist for Hartwick as the eighth seeded Hawks rolled past fourth-seeded Alvernia 4-0 on Saturday night at Sprague Field in Montclair, NJ. The Hawks advance to Sunday's ECAC Mid-Atlantic Championship match against second seed and host Montclair.
The Hawks dominated the Crusaders throughout, outshooting them by a wide 15-3 margin. Kaye opened the scoring after 10:03 as she followed up her own shot for her eight tally of the year. She wasted little time registering her ninth season goal as found the net from the left side from Baughman to give 'Wick a two-goal edge at the half. The Hawks held a 6-3 edge in shots in the period with the Crusaders taking five corners to Hartwick's three.
The second half would be as one-sided as it gets as the Hawks held the Crusaders shot-less (9-0) and recorded a 9-1 edge in penalty corners. Baughman gave Hartwick a three-goal lead 14 minutes into the half with Kaye dishing out her team-best seventh assist. Just 2:15 later, Baughman followed up a shot by Kelsey Kimble (Dingmans Ferry, PA/Delaware Valley) for her fifth tally of the year. Kimble's shot was stopped by Alvernia keeper Abby Eby and Baughman was there to slot it home to close out the night's scoring.
Mackenzie Chapman (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) and Megan Campbell (Rutland, MA/Wachusett Regional) combined for Hartwick's seventh shutout of the year. Chapman stopped three shots in the opening 63 minutes with Campbell playing the final seven minutes in the 'Wick cage.
Junior forward Diana Colombo (Westampton, NJ / Rancocas Valley) and Deana Hagel (Fairfield, NJ / West Essex) each scored a goal for Montclair State as the Red Hawks defeated Catholic in the earlier semifinal.
Montclair State will be seeking its third title in the last four years and fifth overall tomorrow, while the Hawks go after their third championship to go along with crowns won in 1992 and 1995.
