ONEONTA, NY - Visiting RPI spoiled the Hartwick women's tennis team's home opener on Thursday 8-1. The Engineers, after leading by a slim 2-1 margin after doubles play, won all six singles matches to earn the team victory. The Engineers improve to 1-0 while the Hawks fall to 0-1.
Jennifer Lin (Albany, NY/Colonie) and Kim Post (Nashua, NH/North Middlesex Reg.) provided the Hartwick win in second doubles. The pair defeated Engineers Caroline Albrecht (Kinnelon, NJ/Kinnelon) and Brianna Dickie (Acton, MA/Acton Regional) by an eight games to four final count.
Carly Jesset (Shelburne, VT/CVU) and Lauren Michels (Clinton, NY/Clinton) were edged out by two games, 8-6, in third doubles and Betsy Breaznell (Delmar, NY/Bethlehem) and Christina Sorrentino (Sherrill, NY/VVS) fell 8-5 in first doubles.
Lin was the lone Hawk to take her singles match to a deciding set. Jessica Sitzer (Rockaway, NJ/Morris Hills) won the first set, 6-1, with Lin battling back to take the second, 7-5. Sitzer would prevail in the third, 8-6, to take the second singles victory.
After falling behind one set to zero in each of their matches, both Breaznell (1st singles) and Jesset (5th singles) managed to take their second sets to tie-breakers only to fall to their Engineer counterparts. Christine Roe (Phoenix, AZ/North) downed Breaznell 6-3, 7-6 (7-5), and Hetal Baman (Blauvelt, NY/Tappan Zee) scored a 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) win over Jesset.
Dickie, Alexandra Armstrong (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) and Zosia Casterline (Farmington, MI/Farmington) also earned straight set wins on the day.
