ONEONTA, NY - Hartwick held nationally 17th ranked The College of New Jersey to a 1-0 lead for close to 70 minutes on Sunday before the Lions pulled away late in the contest. The Hawks, who were playing their second straight ranked opponent after falling to #12 Rowan yesterday, drop to 1-2 on the year. The Lions, who went 2-0 on the weekend, captured the Mayor's Cup title.
A determined Hartwick squad held the favored Lions to just three shots in the opening 45 minutes of play. Briann McDonough scored from Eva Gimello off a corner kick in the 21st minute, but it was all TCNJ could muster in the opening period.
Twenty-five minutes into the second half, the Lions finally broke through the Hawks' defense for some breathing room as Brenna Rubino tallied off another corner with the service being provided by Nikki Migliori.
The game remained 2-0 until the 82nd minute when Katie Landrigan scored twice in a 1:06 span to widen the Lion lead to 4-0. Landrigan one-timed a shot past Hartwick keeper Alyssa Rondo (Saco, ME/Thornton Acad.) for her first tally and finished off a loose ball in front for her second. With less than two minutes to go, Alexa Rozzi closed out the day's scoring.
Rondo would finish the match with a career-best seven saves in 90 minutes of action in the Hartwick goal.
At the conclusion of the game, Hartwick junior midfielder Katelyn Bosy (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) and sophomore back Julie Kessler (Canton, CT/Canton) were selected to the 2009 Mayor's Cup All-Tournament Team for their efforts over the course of the weekend.
The battle-tested Hawks will now open up their Empire 8 Conference schedule with a road match on Tuesday. The Hawks will travel to Utica College for a 7:30 p.m. game in a rematch of last season's highly-contested, 110-minute 1-1 draw at Elmore Field.
