ELMIRA, NY - Four Hawks earned their first singles win of the season in an 8-1 Hartwick rout of Elmira in women's tennis on Sunday. The victory is Hartwick's first of the year and improves its overall record to 1-4 and 1-3 in the Empire 8.
Senior Betsy Breaznell (Delmar, NY/Bethlehem), junior Jennifer Lin (Albany, NY/Colonie), junior Christina Sorrentino (Sherrill, NY/VVS) and freshman Lauren Michels (Clinton, NY/Clinton) all won their first singles matches of the year on the day.
Breaznell cruised past Rebecca Kingman 6-0, 6-2 in first singles, and Lin needed three sets to get past Alexandra Putney 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 in the second flight. Sorrentino earned the first set in a tie-breaker in her third singles match against Alia Pyros, 7-6 (7-5), and closed out the match in the second set, 6-4. With the day's team result in hand, Michels and Desiree Calderella played their sixth singles match in a tie-breaker format with Michels emerging with an 8-5 triumph.
Kim Post (Nashua, NH/N. Middlesex Reg.) won her singles match to improve to 3-2 on the year. The junior dropped the opening set, 4-6, but came through in the last two sets, 6-4, 6-4.
Post and Lin teamed up for their fourth doubles win in five attempts in 2009 with an 8-2 victory over Putney and Briana Palmiero. Breaznell and Sorrentino scored their first doubles win, 8-4, and Michels and sophomore Kathleen Watson (East Greenbush, NY/Columbia) earned a third doubles victory, 8-5.
The Hawks travel to Union on Tuesday before hosting Utica in a makeup match on Wednesday.
