ONEONTA, NY - A penalty-kick goal from Caitlin Burke in the 48th minute accounted for all the scoring on Tuesday night as Oneonta State edged Hartwick in women's soccer at Elmore Field. The Red Dragons improve to 4-1-1 overall while the Hawks slip to 2-3.
Burke slammed her spot kick into the top left corner of the goal leaving 'Wick keeper Alyssa Rondo (Saco, ME/Thornton Academy) no chance for the game-winner. The penalty occurred after Burke was fouled by Rondo as the two fought for the ball inside the 18-yard box.
Oneonta State ended the evening with a 22-4 advantage in shots, including a 14-2 edge in the second half of play. Melissa VandenBergh and Burke each had three shots on target for the Red Dragons to lead the team.
Senior forward Lauren Ploof (Hammond, NY/Hammond) had the best opportunity of the night for the Hawks with just under seven minutes to play in the contest. A free kick just over midfield made its way into the box where Ploof's header redirected the ball towards the far post only to have Red Dragon keeper Jamie Chyat make the save.
Rondo would close the match with a season-high 10 saves. Chyat earned the shutout making one stop on Ploof's effort.
Hartwick gets back to Empire 8 play this coming Saturday against St. John Fisher at 2:30 pm. on Elmore Field. The Hawks will look to maintain their perfect mark in conference play after opening with a 2-1 win at Utica last week.
