Hartwick Upends #20 Hamilton in Overtime

ONEONTA, NYJen Kaye (Altamont, NY/Guilderland) scored from a pass from Amanda Barton (Endwell, NY/Greene) 3:02 into the first sudden victory overtime period to give Hartwick a 2-1 victory over nationally 20th ranked Hamilton College on Tuesday in a cold, rainy night at Wright Stadium in Oneonta.
Kaye took a feed from Barton on the right side of the goal and beat Continental keeper Courtney DeMaria low to the far post for her second game-winning tally of the season. Goalie MacKenzie Chapman (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) matched a career-high with 13 saves in the Hartwick cage. The victory is the Hawks' second in a row and gives them a 5-3 overall record. The Continentals, who just cracked the NFHCA Top20 today, fall to 4-2.
Hartwick got on the scoreboard first 7:21 into the match as freshman Kelsey Kimble (Dingmans Ferry, PA/Delaware Valley) finished off her third of the year in front after DeMaria stopped a initial shot from Kaye. The Hawks hung onto the lead for over 26 minutes until Amy Allen connected off a blast from the right side of the cage past Chapman with just 1:15 to play before halftime. Colleen Callaghan earned the assist on the play. The half would end in a 1-1 deadlock with the Continentals holding a 10-9 edge in shots and a 10-3 advantage in penalty corners.
In the second half, Hamilton held the territorial advantage outshooting the Hawks 7-1 while taking 10 corners to 'Wick's one. Despite the pressure, the Hawks' defense held off the visitors led by Chapman's five saves.
In the first overtime, Barton had a hard shot saved by DeMaria after only 45 seconds before she found Kaye in front for the clincher just over two minutes later.
The Hawks will look to continue its win streak on Saturday at Wright Stadium. Hartwick gets back to Empire 8 play on Saturday with an 11 a.m. match against winless Elmira.
