Union Prevails in Double Overtime Over Hartwick Field Hockey Team

           ONEONTA, NY – Union College pushed across a late goal at the of regulation and then won it with 4 minutes left in double overtime to edge Hartwick College 2-1 in a non-conference field hockey match up this evening at Wright Stadium. The Dutchwomen improve to 7-5. Hartwick falls to 3-9. This marks the 6th time that the Hawks entered overtime and their 7th one-goal game of the season.
            Hartwick took the lead with eight minutes left in the first half  when senior Katie Cikatz (Salem, CT/ East Lynne) crossed the ball to sophomore Kelsey Kimble (Dingmans Ferry, PA/Delaware Valley) whofinished off her fourth goal of the year. Heading into halftime, the Hawks held the advantage in shots, 7-6 and were tied with the Dutchwomen in corners, 6-6.
            Trailing 1-0 late in the contest, Lauren Winchell one-timed a feed from Shannon Brady with 7:38 remaining in regulation to tie the game. Union doubled up the Hawks in shots in the second half 10-5.
            After a scoreless first overtime that saw all six shots come from the Ducthwomen, Kelsey Powers knocked in the game-winner for her 8th goal of the season and ended the game with 4:13 remaining in the second extra period. Union's Tyler Willey started the play as she sent the ball in towards the Hartwick goal from roughly 40 yards away. Hartwick goalie Mackenzie Chapman (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) attempted to let the ball roll wide or into the open goal, with either resulting in a Hartwick possession. The ball, however, ricocheted off the post right to Powers who finished the ball into an open net for the winning tally.
            The Hawks had their only shot of the overtime periods come 2:23 into the second session but Amanda Barton's (Endwell, NY/Greene) rocket from the right side of the Union goal went wide of the far post.
            Chapman tallied 16 saves, marking the fourth time she has collected 16 saves or more. Union's Sarah Rios picked up eight stops for Union. The Dutchwomen held a 24-13 advantage in the shot department, and led 25-15 in corners.
            Hartwick will host a key Empire 8 game on Saturday, October 16th when the team hosts Nazareth. The contest at Wright Stadium will start at 2:00 p.m.
