Springfield Runs Past Football 39-20

            SPRINGFIELD, MA – Freshman quarterback Austin Bateman ran for 121 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Springfield College football team to a 39-20 Empire 8 victory over Hartwick College tonight at Amos Alonzo Stagg Field. The Pride scored three touchdowns in a span of 4:04 late in the third and early in the fourth quarter to break the game open.
            With the win, Springfield ups its record to 6-2 overall, and 2-2 in the Empire 8. Hartwick falls to 2-5 on the season, and 0-4 in the conference. The Pride finished with 462 yards rushing and 522 yards of total offense. Hartwick finished with 280 total yards.
            Bateman ran the ball 30 times for those 121 yards and two TDs. He also completed three of five pass attempts for 60 more yards. Junior halfback Mark Safer accumulated an even 100 yards rushing and one TD.
            For Hartwick, junior Dan Brainard (Owego, NY/Owego Free) completed 18 of 49 passes for two TDs and 267 yards. He also had two interceptions. Senior wide receiver Jordan Wilkins (Portsmouth, NH/Hyde School) registered six catches for 102 yards and two touchdowns. Junior running back Anthony Casimano (Gansevoort, NY/Schuylerville) rushed for 20 yards on eight carries. He also had the game's longest play, returning a kickoff 86 yards for a touchdown with 2:37 left in the game to close the night's scoring. Casimano finished with 175 yards returning five kicks.
            On the defensive side of the ball for Hartwick, junior linebacker Jordan Spirou (Westbury, NY/W.T. Clarke) and sophomore Bryan Schweitzer (Babylon, NY/Babylon) each recorded career highs of 18 tackles. Both players forced a fumble in the game and Spirou also recovered a fumble. Sophomore Jim DeRosa (Centerreach, NY/Centerreach) notched a career-best 12 tackles and blocked a kick, and sophomore RJ Roth (Cornwall, NY/Cornwall) also picked up 12 hits in the contest.
            Defensively for Springfield, senior inside linebacker Ken Goodwin led the Pride with 11 tackles, including seven solos. He also had one fumble recovery, one forced fumble, one pass break-up, and one interception. Senior defensive end Cody Flanigan added six tackles, including 1.5 sacks and one fumble recovery.
            Hartwick looks for its first Empire 8 victory next Saturday at home against Utica.
