Norwich Runs Past ’Wick Football

NORTHFIELD, VT – Norwich University registered 501 yards of total offense, including 365 on the ground to defeat Hartwick College, 42-27, on Saturday afternoon at Sabine Field. With the loss, the Hawks drop to 2-1 on the year and fall to the Cadets for the first time since 2005. With the victory, Norwich extends its unbeaten streak to 11 games dating back to last season.
Despite the setback, the Hawks racked up 452 yards of offense. Quarterbacks Kyle Morenus (Sidney, NY/Sidney) and Dan Brainard (Owego, NY/Owego Free) combined for 308 passing yards and three touchdowns. Junior wide receiver Jordan Wilkins (Portsmouth, NH/Hyde School) made six catches for 141 yards and two scores and Ryan Mosack (Oneida, NY/Oneida) added seven catches for 78 yards and a touchdown.
Running back Anthony Casimano (Gansevoort, NY/Schuylerville) ran for 112 yards, including a career-high 57-yard run. Chad Rockefeller (Delhi, NY/Delaware Academy) and Stephen Leisenfelder (Wynantskill, NY/Troy) led Hartwick on defense with 11 tackles each.
Norwich (3-0) wasted little time getting on the scoreboard as it scored on its first two possessions of the game. A Kyle Sabourin 5-yard pass to Derek Hungerford capped a 7-play, 75-yard drive to start the game and following a 'Wick punt, an Andrew Fulford 55-yard run set up a Danny Triplett 4-yard touchdown rush for a quick 14-0 Cadet lead.
Senior kicker Heath Dunn (Mechanicville, NY/Mechanicville) gave the Hawks three points as he connected on a 34-yard field goal after a 53-yard Hartwick drive to make the score 14-3 with 3:41 to play in the opening quarter.
The Cadets punted on their next possession as did the Hawks, but a fumble from Orwin Etkins on Norwich's return gave Hartwick great field position after recovering. 'Wick drove from the Norwich 25-yard line to the goal line but couldn't punch it in and had to settle for a Dunn 17-yarder making the score 14-6.
Sabourin later hit Emilio Martinez for an 8-yard touchdown pass to extend Norwich's lead. The Hawks came right back on their next possession, however, as Morenus hit Wilkins for a 13-yard TD pass to cut the deficit to eight and the half ended with Norwich leading 21-13.
In the third quarter, Norwich had an opportunity to tack on another three but a missed field goal from 25 yards away kept it an 8-point game entering the fourth.
Triplett made it into the end zone for the second time on a 3-yard run to push the Cadets in front by 15 early in the final quarter, and following a Hartwick punt, Sabourin ran for another six points for a 22-point edge (35-13).
The Cadets got the ball back and ate up 5:25 off the clock on a 10-play, 72-yard drive. Guerschom Jean-Gilles capped the drive off with a one-yard touchdown run to make the score 42-13. Brainard then hit Wilkins and Mosack in the end zone on consecutive possessions and two Dunn extra points made the final score 42-27.
Brainard would finish the day 10-for-19 for 144 yards and two TDs. Morenus threw for 164 yards and a score on 11-of-28 passing. Jordan Spirou (Westbury, NY/W.T. Clarke) notched 10 tackles for the Hartwick defense. Ray Mitchell (White Plains, NY/White Plains) had nine tackles and Joe D'Alessandro (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) added eight.
Hartwick has a bye week next Saturday. The Hawks open up Empire 8 play at Ithaca on October 2nd at 1 p.m.
