W&J Defeats Hartwick Field Hockey 3-1

ONEONTA, NY – Visiting Washington and Jefferson took the lead 3:01 into the game and never looked back in a 3-1 win over Hartwick's field hockey team on Saturday at Wright Stadium. The loss drops the Hawks' overall record to 2-5 and they now stand at 1-1 in the Empire 8 Conference.
Jennifer Marabella scored the first of her two goals in the first half 181 seconds into the match to give the Presidents the early lead. Hartwick goalie Mackenzie Chapman (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) made one of her 16 saves on the day on a Julianne Zackay shot but the rebound went right to Marabella who finished from in close.
Thirty minutes, eight seconds later, Marabella finished off a cross in front of the goal from teammate Kim Marcius and W&J had a two-goal cushion heading into halftime.
The game remained 2-0 for the opening 23 minutes of the second half until Alexandria Kania scored on a deflection following a pass from Erin Barno with 11:12 to go.
In the late stages of the match, the Hawks earned one of their four penalty corners on the day and capitalized on the chance. Senior Katie Cikatz (Salem, CT/East Lyme) slid the corner to classmate Amanda Barton (Endwell, NY/Greene) just outside the circle on the right side of the W&J goal. Barton's centering pass was one-timed by senior Jen Kaye (Altamant, NY/Guilderland) and the ball eluded President goalie Shelby Colyer to make it a 3-1 game.
The Presidents held a 26-4 advantage in shots in the contest. The Presidents also took 16 corners to the Hawks' six. Chapman stopped 11 shots in the second half for the Hawks. Colyer finished the game with two stops.
Hartwick hits the road for two straight games next week. The Hawks play at Hamilton Tuesday night in Clinton, NY and head south to Hoboken, NJ for a conference match with Stevens on Saturday, October 2.
