Field Hockey Routs Elmira 5-1 For Second Straight Victory

ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick field hockey scored four times in the opening 13:05 of the game en route to a 5-1 victory over Elmira College in an Empire 8 Conference game on Saturday at Wright Stadium. With the victory, the Hawks improve to 4-6 overall, win their second straight match, and stay in a three-way tie for second place in the conference standings with W&J and Stevens.
Senior Alicia Flewelling (Queensbury, NY/Glens Falls) tallied two goals and an assist after not registering a single point in 34 previous games in a Hartwick uniform. Kelsey Kimble (Dingmans Ferry, PA/Delaware Valley), Meghan Sweeney (Foxboro, MA/Foxboro), and Brittany Baughman (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) also scored for Hartwick. Meghan Campbell (Rutland, MA/Wachusett Reg.) and Devyn Staley (Greene, NY/Greene) combined for 10 saves in the 'Wick cage.
Flewelling was credited with the Hawks' opening goal as she was the last 'Wick player to touch the ball after an Elmira defender knocked the ball backwards and eluded goalie Lauren Thomas for the 1-0 Hartwick lead.
Just 2:12 later, Flewelling put one directly into the Elmira cage as she slapped in a crossing shot from teammate Hiliary Carlson (Foxboro, MA/Foxboro).
Kimble added to the Hawks' advantage 9:19 into the match as she maintained possession of the ball and dribbled in and out of four Soaring Eagle defenders before depositing her shot to the far-post past EC relief keeper Brooke Ramage.
Less than four minutes later, Hartwick led by a count of 4-0. Flewelling played a low cross along the end line in front of goal where Sweeney knocked the ball just past the goal line.
The Soaring Eagles were able to keep the Hawks out for the final 22 minutes of the first half. The Hawks held a 12-7 edge in shots in the first 35 minutes.
Just under 14 minutes into the second stanza, Baughman scored her first of the year as she found the net following a deflection off of Ramage.
The Soaring Eagles finally notched their first goal at the 50:10 mark of the match. McKenna Light started the play and Gina Maffei tipped the ball in past Staley for the goal.
The Hawks out-shot the visitors 19-13 for the game. EC had the edge in penalty corners, 14-10.
The win for Hartwick is its 11th in 12 previous meetings with Elmira. The Hawks have now won seven straight against the Purple and Gold.
Hartwick field hockey hits the road next Saturday for a conference game at St. John Fisher on Saturday, October 8 at 3 p.m. The Hawks will look for their third straight win and fourth in their last five.
