Field Hockey Downs Ithaca 2-1

ITHACA, NY – Hartwick field hockey snapped a five-game winless streak and evened its Empire 8 Conference record at 1-1 with a 2-1 road victory at Ithaca College on Saturday at Higgins Stadium. Junior Kelsey Kimble (Dingmans Ferry, PA/Delaware Valley) scored both of the Hartwick goals in the opening half of play. With the win, the Hawks improve to 2-5 on the year. Ithaca drops to 2-4 overall and 1-1 in the conference.
Hartwick jumped in front 12:55 into the game as Kimble deflected in an Alicia Flewelling (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) shot for a 1-0 lead.
The Bombers needed just 21 second to tie the score. IC's Laura Ramsey pounced on the ball following a scramble and got it past Hartwick goalie Megan Campbell (Rutland, MA/Wachusett Reg.).
With eight minutes and 10 seconds remaining in the first half, Kimble scored what proved to be the game-winner. She broke in alone with Ithaca goalkeeper Kelly Singleton and tucked it past her into the left side of goal. It marked Kimble's 18th career tally and her seventh game-winning goal as a Hawk.
The half ended with Hartwick holding the edge on the scoreboard and in shots (7-4). Both teams earned a pair of penalty corners.
Eight of Hartwick's nine shots in the second half were on target, but Singleton saved each one to keep the Bombers in the game. Her save total included a stop on a Kimble penalty stroke with 10 and a half minutes left.
Ithaca secured nine penalty corners in the second half but couldn't convert on any. All four shots that made their way to the Hartwick cage were turned away by Campbell. The Bombers' best chance to even the score came with 15:36 left in the contest as Heather Kozimor was awarded a penalty stroke. Campbell denied Kozimor on her shot, however, to keep the Hawks in front. It proved to be the final shot on goal for the hosts in the game.
Hartwick ended the match with a 16-12 edge in shots. The Bombers had 11 corners while the Hawks recorded six.
Campbell finished the game with five saves and four in the second half. Singleton made 11 saves for IC.
Hartwick returns home to Wright Stadium to play Geneseo tomorrow at noon.
