ONEONTA, NY- The Hartwick field hockey team rallied to send the game to overtime but Ithaca's Julia Conroy would the score the game-winner with 1:35 left in the extra period as the visiting Bombers defeated the Hawks 3-2 at a damp and drizzly Wright Stadium on Wednesday afternoon. Hartwick's overall record is even at 4-4 and drops the Hawks to 2-1 in the Empire 8. Ithaca improves to 5-4 overall and is also 2-1 in the Empire 8.
The Bombers dominated in shots in the first period as they held a 7-0 advantage. Ithaca would strike first in the 23
rd minute when Andrea Pace redirected a shot off teammate Danielle Coiro that trickled past Hartwick goalkeeper
Megan Campbell (Rutland, MA/Wachusett Regional) and into the goal to put Ithaca on top 1-0.
In the second period, the Hawks had yet to take their first shot of the game when Corio scored for the Bombers just under five minute in to give IC a 2-0 lead. Less than six minutes after Coiro's goal, 'Wick would convert its first shot of the game when
Kelsey Kimble (Dingmans Ferry, PA/Delaware Academy) beat Ithaca keeper Kelly Singleton and
Jessica Ott (Katonah, NY/John Jay) finished it off into an open goal to make it a 2-1 game.
Ithaca relentlessly attacked in the Hartwick zone but Campbell would turn away any shot that came to her. The Bombers still led 2-1 late in the period until
Katie Lonsky (Dingmans Ferry, PA/Blair Academy) scored off a Kimble assist with 2:33 remaining in regulation to tie the game up at two-all and eventually send the game to overtime.
In the extra period, it was the Hawks who attacked on offense as they put up six shots in the frame.
Hiliary Carlson (Foxboro, MA/Foxboro) had two shots in row that were rejected by Singleton. Carlson and
Meghan Sweeney (Foxboro, MA/Foxboro) also had shots within seconds of each turned away. Ithaca would win the contest on its only shot in the period when Conroy fired the ball past Campbell to end the game.
Despite the large advantage early on, Ithaca led in total shots by only a 15-12 margin. The Bombers also had a slight lead in corners, 9-7.
Campbell stopped a season-high 12 shots for the Hawks in goal. Singleton saved six shots for the Bombers.
Hartwick will next host St. John Fisher this coming Saturday at Wright Stadium. Game time will be at 11 a.m.
