Full Weekend Slate For Hartwick Teams Kicks Off Friday

ONEONTA, NY – Six Hartwick teams, with several competing in key conference games, are in action this weekend both on Oyaron Hill and elsewhere around the northeast. 'Wick field hockey and volleyball get the weekend going on Friday beginning at 4 p.m. followed by seven more Hartwick games on Saturday.

Hartwick opens up Mid-American Conference play on the road at #9 Akron Saturday. The Hawks are winners of two of their last three matches following Tuesday night's 3-1 victory over UMass-Lowell on Elmore. Nick Hills (Garden Suburb, Australia/U. of Newcastle), Will Broomfield (Brighton, England/Cloud Community College), and Jamie O'Grady (Falkirk, Scotland/Falkirk) each scored second-half goals with Marc Russell (Glasgow, Scotland/Woodfarm HS), Broomfield, and Chris Walter (Amherst, NY/Nichols School) picking up assists as the Hawks dominated the visitors for 90 minutes. The Zips, a perennial national power, are 7-2 overall and 2-0 in the MAC. They have won four straight games and have not been scored upon in the last 360 minutes of play.

'Wick football takes its unblemished 3-0 record into Saturday's game at Wright Stadium against unbeaten Ithaca (3-0) in the Empire 8 Conference opener for the Hawks. Hartwick was idle last weekend and last played on Sept. 21 in a 45-19 pounding of Becker College. The Hawks' offense is ranked 20th in the nation in scoring offense while the defense is ranked 22nd in the country. Offensively, sophomore quarterback John Garcia (Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley) is ranked second nationally in touchdown passes (12) while senior running back Kurtis Ahart (Spencer, NY/Spencer Van Etten) is 10th in the nation in rushing yards. On defense, senior lineman R.J. Roth (Cornwall, NY/Cornwall) is 20th in solo tackles while senior linebacker Bryan Schweitzer (Babylon, NY/Babylon) ranks 20th in forced fumbles. Ithaca has beaten Moravian (31-7), Union (17-3), and it won a come-from-behind game over Buffalo State (24-20) on Saturday. The Hawks last beat the Bombers 32-30 at Wright in 2007.

Field hockey hosts a pair of teams on consecutive days on Friday and Saturday against Vassar and Elmira, respectively. The Hawks look to snap a five-game winless streak, which includes a heartbreaking 1-0 loss to E8 rival Washington & Jefferson on the road last Saturday. Junior Meghan Fay (Foxboro, MA/Foxboro) leads a balanced Hartwick attack with four goals and an assist on the season with sophomore Jessica Ott (Katonah, NY/John Jay) contributing two goals and four assists. Goalkeeper Shannon Carter (Falls Church, VA/J.E.B. Stuart) has registered 41 saves in her last three games, including a career-best 17 stops against Stevens on Sept. 21. Vassar enters Wright with a 4-4 mark and two straight one-goal defeats to nationally ranked opponents, Rochester and Williams Smith. Elmira is 1-6 on the season and in search of its first Empire 8 win with an 0-3 mark.

The Hawks get back to Empire 8 play after a 1-2 showing at the opening conference crossover at Lambros Arena two weekends ago. Hartwick will travel to Elmira for a trio of matches against the host Soaring Eagles on Friday, and St. John Fisher and Alfred on Saturday. In 'Wick's last match, junior outside hitter Dana Martin (Chester, NY/Burke Catholic) registered nine kills, six aces, and six digs, sophomore hitter Hannah Strom (Kenmore, WA/Inglemoor) added 11 kills and four aces, and senior middle Katie Ryan (Circleville, NY/Pine Bush) notched seven kills in a 3-1 victory over Morrisville State. Elmira enters the weekend with a 12-7 overall mark and a 1-1 Empire 8 record. Fisher is 10-9 and 2-0 while Alfred is 2-14 and 0-2.

Women's soccer (4-3-3, 1-2-1 E8) picked up its first Empire 8 Conference win of the season on Wednesday night with a thorough 3-0 victory at Utica College. The Hawks will travel to Hoboken, NJ in hopes of earning their first win over the Stevens Ducks in program history after six straight defeats. The freshman trio of Angela Luizzi (Albany, NY/Guilderland), Allyson Daniels (Pembroke, NH/Pembroke Academy), and Cami Cleaveland (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) have combined to score 17 of Hartwick's 25 goals thus far this season. The Hawks' defense, anchored by junior goalkeeper Hope Brown (Sherburne, NY/Sherburne-Earlville), has been stingy, conceding just nine goals over ten games with four shutouts this season. The Ducks are 5-5 through 10 games in 2013. They are 1-0 in conference play after an identical 3-0 blanking of Utica last Saturday.

Women's Tennis
Sat., Oct. 5 vs. Wells – 10 a.m.
Hartwick women's tennis enters the weekend with a 4-6 mark and host visiting Wells College Saturday. A victory for the Hawks would keep their postseason hopes alive with one match remaining on the regular season schedule. Three of the Hawks' four victories on the season have been dominating performances in which they shutout their opponents by 9-0 margins. All six of Hartwick's singles starters boast at least four wins or better, led by freshman Caitlin O'Brien's (Glenville, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) 7-3 mark at fifth singles. Junior Nicole Schepisi (Rensselaer, NY/Columbia) has a 6-4 record at the number two flight. The Express comes to town with only four matches under its belt this fall. The team has an 0-4 record.
