ONEONTA, NY- In a battle of cross-city rivals, it was Oneonta State who came out on top as it defeated the Hartwick women's soccer team 4-0 on Wednesday night at Elmore Field. With the win, the Red Dragons improve their record to 10-4-3 while the Hawks are now 7-7-3.
The Hawks controlled possession in the opening moments of the first half but could not penetrate the Oneonta defense. Both teams went back and forth battling for possession.
The Red Dragons got into the Hartwick zone and got off a couple of shots that went high. After the Red Dragons' Jessica Lyden's shot went high above the goal, Hartwick goalie
Annie Millar (Illion, NY/Illion) set up for a goal kick. Her attempt went short and was picked up by O-State's Kayla Ceschini, who slipped past the Hartwick defense, nailing a shot past Millar and into goal to put the Red Dragons ahead 1-0 in the 30
th minute.
A little over two minutes later, Oneonta would strike again. Off a corner kick from Liz Lasota, the ball fell among a crowd. Hartwick's
Abby Wheeler (Chatham, NY/Chatham) prevented it from entering the goal but O-State's Jessica Lyden was there to put it back into the net and the Red Dragons moved ahead 2-0.
The Red Dragons dominated the second half as they held a 11-3 lead in shots. The Hawks had a chance to cut the deficit to one goal in the 67
th minute when
Angela Luizzi (Albany, NY/Guilderland) got Red Dragon goalie Kelley Murphy out of position but her shot would be stuffed by Murphy.
O-State would score its third goal in the 70
th minute. Hartwick defender
Mary Morrison (Fulton, NY/G. Ray Bodley) headed a shot away from the goal, but the Red Dragons' Amanda Regensberger came up and deposited the ball into the net to increase the Oneonta State lead to 3-0. Less than two minutes later, Karly DeSimone would feed to Melissa Gugliemo for the goal to put the Red Dragons ahead 4-0 where the score would stay.
Oneonta State had a commanding lead in shots, 17-5, and in corner kicks, 10-0. Luizzi had two of Hartwick's five shots.
Millar took the loss in goal and stopped three shots. Murphy had two saves for the Red Dragons in 77:01 of game time. She was replaced by Becky Fildes in the second half and she did not record save in 12:59 of playing time.
The Hawks head on the road to face Alfred in their final regular season game on Saturday. Game time will be at 5 p.m.
