Box Score

ONEONTA, NY- Amanda Coppolo (Schnectady, NY/Guilderland) and Kelly Kramer (Royersford, PA/Villa Maria Academy) both tallied goals for the Hartwick field hockey team as the Hawks ended their six-game winless streak with a 2-1 victory over visiting Elmira on Saturday afternoon at Wright Stadium. The Hawks are now 3-7 overall and picked up their first win in the Empire 8. The Soaring Eagles are 1-7 overall and 0-4 in the E8.

Both defenses were tight in the opening minutes of the first period as neither offense could gain any traction. It was the Soaring Eagles who would strike first in the game a little over 19 minutes into the frame. Following a penalty corner from Alli Gilbert, McKenna Light hit a long shot from the left side of the cage that got past goalie Shannon Carter (Falls Church, VA/J.E.B. Stuart) and into the goal to put Elmira ahead 1-0.

Despite the early deficit, the Hawks would not give up. In the 31st minute, Hiliary Carlson (Foxboro, MA/Foxboro) would get a shot off that was saved by Elmira goalie Lauren Thomas. A scramble enused in front of the goal and Coppolo was able to poke the ball through traffic and into the cage to tie the contest up at 1-all. The Hawks had a couple of chances to take the lead before halftime but were denied each time and the score remained tied.

In the 53rd minute, Hartwick took the lead on Kramer's third goal of the season. The score held up as the Hawks held the Soaring Eagles to just two wide shots for the final 17 minutes of the game.

Hartwick led in total shots, 9-6, and in penalty corners, 9-7. Carter had two saves in the cage for the Hawks while Thomas stopped five shots for the Soaring Eagles.

The Hawks will head down Interstate 88 for a non-conference match with Union on Tuesday. Game time will be at 4 p.m.
