ONEONTA, NY- The Hartwick field hockey team opened its 2013 season at home against the Pacers of Marywood University on Saturday afternoon at Wright Stadium. Despite two lightning delays in the second half, the Hawks held on to defeat the Pacers 3-1.

The Hawks dominated the game in every statistical category. Hartwick led the Pacers 16-3 in shots and 6-1 in penalty corners.

Hartwick had several chances in the early portion of the first half to take the lead but could not capitalize on its opportunities. 'Wick finally got on the scoreboard with 23:42 showing on the clock when Holley Reynolds (Walton, NY/Walton) scored on a penalty stroke to put the Hawks ahead 1-0. Hartwick later increased its lead to 2-0 when Hiliary Carlson (Foxboro, MA/Foxboro) found Lauren Crimi (West Babylon, NY/West Babylon) whose shot got past a diving Natalie Winters.

Marywood would get its first score of the contest at the 13:23 mark. Molly Westbrook dished off to Kathryn Morin whose backhanded shot slid past Hartwick goaltender Jilian Sabatino (Boonton, NJ/Boonton) to cut the Hartwick lead to 2-1 where the score stood at halftime.

Early in the second half, Carlson hit a penalty corner shot that was settled in by Catie Santaniello (West Islip, NY/West Islip). Santaniello hit a strike towards the goal that was corralled by Meghan Fay (Foxboro, MA/Foxboro). Fay's shot went off a Marywood defender and to Jessica Ott (Katonah, NY/John Jay) whose shot was rejected by Winters but came back to an open Carlson who deposited the ball in the back of the cage to move Hartwick ahead 3-1 at 30:50.

The game was halted with 9:52 left to play in the second half after lightning was detected and the teams cleared the field. After an almost two hour halt in play, both squads returned to the turf only to go back inside three minutes later. Play resumed after nearly an hour and a half interruption. Despite the two weather delays, the Hawks held off any threat of a Marywood comeback.
