SCRANTON, PA – Two first half goals were too much to overcome for Hartwick's field hockey team on Friday as Marywood University came away with a 2-1 victory on its home field. The game served as the season opener for both squads.

Freshman forward Claudia Stone (Akron, NY/Akron) tallied in her first collegiate game early in the second half as the Hawks pulled to within one, but 'Wick was unable to even the score over the final 29:07 of action.

The Pacers got on the scoreboard on their third shot of the contest at 15:23 of the first half. Leanne McManus would score off a cross with Amelia Waibel picking up the assist.

Nine minutes, 34 seconds later, Marywood added to its total. Julie Kowalski scored into the left corner and the hosts took a two-goal lead into halftime.

The Hawks came out firing in the second half as they got into the scoring column after just 5:53. Sophomore Maxine Dunn (Peterborough, NH/ConVal) started the play with a shot that was saved by Marywood goalie Kayle Huey. Stone was there to pounce on the rebound scoring her first goal in a Hartwick uniform and the Hawk deficit was cut in half.

Roughly seven minutes later, the Hawks generated a trio of penalty corners. Stone had a pair of shots blocked and one which was turned away by Huey. Sophomore Sarah Ryan (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs) had the last chance for the Hawks at the 59:02 mark but her shot went wide of the goal.

The Pacers would end the game with a 21-9 edge in shots. They took 12 penalty corners to the Hawks' five.

Keeper Yanna Boggio (Amherst, NY/Amherst), who was also taking part in her first game for Hartwick, made a total of 14 stops in her college debut. Huey finished with three saves.

The Hawks will next play on Wednesday, September 3 as they host RPI at Wright Stadium at 4 p.m.
