ONEONTA, NY – The Hartwick field hockey team beat Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute by a final score of 2-1. The Hawks duo of senior captain
Maxine Dunn (Peterborough, NH/Conval) and freshman
Allyson Quirk (Longmeadow, MA/Longmeadow) each registered a goal in the season home opener. 'Wick improves to 1-0 on the season while RPI drops to 0-1.
The Hartwick field hockey team imposed their will early on the visiting Engineers, immediately putting pressure to their defense. In the early going, the Hawks released three consecutive shots to the credit of Quirk,
Claudia Stone (Akron, NY/Akron) and
Courtney Coons (Wilton, NY/South Glens Falls) within the first two minutes of action.
With 14:10 to go in the first stanza, senior captain Dunn rattled off a shot that found its way through RPI's sophomore goalkeeper Kayla Bell. This marked the first goal of the season and the third in Dunn's career. The goal came on a
Marissa Downes'
(Boiceville, NY/Onteora) assist and granted 'Wick the early control 1-0.
RPI combatted Hartwick's daunting defense and would eventually see through with a goal of its own. Off of a Megan Jones' penalty corner, the Engineers' sophomore Taylor Clink sailed one in from the top of the circle to deadlock the score at one apiece.
The Hawks entered the second period reflecting much of what they did in the first. They quickly attacked and contested the Engineers' approach right out of the intermission. Freshman midfielder
Maggie Stauble (Longmeadow, MA/Kingston) proved herself as a force in her career debut. In the 38
th minute, the first-year player swooped in and cut off a shot by sophomore attacker Cristina Tellex to collect a defensive save.
Her defensive stop promptly shifted the game's momentum. In the 39
th minute, Hartwick landed another goal, this time to the credit of Quirk. Senior forward
Sarah Ryan (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs) drove hard and with a spot on pass to a cutting Quirk down the middle, the freshman forward was able to put it home.
Playing from behind with much of the half in front of them, RPI continued to rally back. But the Hawks proved too much for the visitors and took the match.
Next, the Hawks travel to Keuka College this Saturday for a 1 p.m. match. Fans can follow the action via the live stats link:
