ONEONTA, NY – On Thursday, Hartwick College announced its Athletic Award winners for the 2020-21 academic year. Five major award winners highlighted the announcement.
Field hockey midfielder
Tegan Robinson (Mechanicville, NY/Shenendehowa) and football tight end
Jack Steinman (North Haven, CT/North Haven) captured the Margaret Lunn Memorial and the Harry Mosher Memorial Awards, respectively, which are handed out to members of the senior class. Robinson was named the Lunn recipient for exemplifying athletic ability, leadership and sportsmanship, while Steinman was honored with the Mosher for personifying courage, desire, humility and unselfish devotion to his team.
"Tegan was a four-year starter and two-time captain for our field hockey program," said head field hockey coach
Erin Autera. "This spring, Tegan received Empire 8 All-Tournament Team and First Team for her leadership and excellence on the field. Tegan led our team on and off the field with her ability to connect with each of our players and help motivate the team through her own hard work despite the short senior season she was given. On top of making sure the team was working hard at our goals, Tegan made sure our team acted with respect and sportsmanship to each team we faced by reminding our team to wish the opponents good luck. Tegan's leadership, dedication, and kindness to others made her the ultimate captain of our program and she is extremely deserving of this honor."
"I am very proud of Jack and how he has represented our football program and the College," Hartwick coach
Mark Carr stated. "Jack meets all of the criteria of the Harry Mosher Memorial Award. He is courageous and very humble. During his four years he has displayed a great desire to better himself as well as his teammates. He has been as committed to our program as anyone I have ever coached."
Women's lacrosse senior goalkeeper
Jennifer Paszko (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) was chosen as the winner of the LeRoy House Jr. Memorial Award, which is presented to the student connected with the athletic department who has exceptional enthusiasm for and dedication to Hartwick Athletics. The recipient of this particular award has also displayed service to the Hartwick community in some capacity outside athletics.
Hartwick women's lacrosse coach
Nora Fallon-Oben commended Paszko's contributions to the program and her teammates. "The best way I can describe Jen is as a true role model and leader. Not only is Jen an excellent student, she also has an incredible work ethic and drive that is contagious to others. She is constantly doing the right thing, putting in extra work outside of practice, and has tremendous character. Jen's teammates love and respect her. In fact, there is a running joke on our team that uses the acronym W.W.J.D., or in other words, "What Would Jen P Do?" Not only is she a co-captain of our team, she is also involved in many different areas of campus and is always representing Hartwick in the best light."
Senior field hockey goalkeeper
Allyson Osborne (Nottingham, PA/Solanco) and junior men's basketball player
Bobby Connors (Rockville Centre, NY/Chaminade) were chosen as the winners of the M. Beal Banks Award, which is presented to individuals who have best pursued excellence in their sport to the best of their ability and have enthused others with their dedication and commitment.
"Oz was a four-year starting goalie for our program earning Empire 8 First Team her junior and senior year, Second Team All-Region her junior year, and Empire 8 Goalkeeper of Year this spring season," added Autera. "She is extremely dedicated to Hartwick Field Hockey through countless hours of individual sessions, watching film, coaching our younger goalies, and making highlight videos for our team. This year, Oz truly stepped it up in regards to her leadership and enthusiasm on the field. Oz was always the one cheering our goalies on, competing with our field players, and helped motivate others on the team with her effort and encouragement. There is no one more deserving of this award."
Hartwick men's basketball coach
Waleed Farid had high praise for Connors for his efforts in a tough academic year. "In a year with so many challenges, obstacles, and reasons to lose motivation, Bobby has been relentless in his pursuit for continuous improvement. His dedication and commitment to getting better and to our team are second to none. Bobby's tireless work ethic, passion, and enthusiasm have been a true inspiration to us all."
Steinman and Osborne received the Frederick M. Binder Scholar Athlete Award, which goes to the senior male and female athletes who have played a varsity sport at least two years and have achieved both athletic and academic excellence.
Forty-eight Hartwick student-athletes received True Blue Awards, which are given to student-athletes who have competed in their sport for all four years or three if a graduating three-year student. One hundred twenty-one Hawks were awarded the Phillip S. Wilder Jr. Award for academic distinction. The award is presented to student-athletes or managers who have achieved at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA.
