Cortland Classic Brings Out the Best in the Hawks

Cortland, NY – The Cortland Classic was held over these past two days at the SUNY Cortland Stadium Complex. The Hartwick Men's Track and Field team competed with 14 other teams with NCAA DIII representing the majority of the competition. This meet was the second to last meet of the regular season and the Hawks are starting to peak at the right time with Empire 8 championships just two weeks away. 
 

Friday

  • The quartet of Patrick Conteh (Salisbury, Md.), Joe Catalano (Chester, N.Y.), Kevin Mason (Galloway, N.J.), and Aidan Freda (Westtown, N.Y.) finished 9th in the 4x400m relay. Their time of 3:44.95 was their best time of the season. 

  • Prior to the 4x400m, Conteh ran a personal best time of 11.62 seconds in the 100m invitational heat. He finished 12th amongst the field. 

  • Robert Burns (Copake, N.Y.) finished 12th and 21st in the Javelin and Hammer respectively.

  • Corey Quomony (Aberdeen, Md.) finished 16th in the Long Jump with a mark of 20 ft 1 inch. 

  • Prior to the 4x400m relay, Freda ran his best race of the season in the 1500m. He lowered his personal best from just last week down another 10 seconds to 4:29.27. He placed 23rd in the event. 

  • Josh Worrell (White Plains, N.Y.) competed in the open heat of the 100m and finished 7th. 
     

Saturday

  • The 4x100m set the tone for another strong day of track and field for the Hawks. Conteh, Quomony,  Worrell, and Quran Best (Bronx, N.Y.) got the baton around the track in 47.17 seconds to place 3rd in the event. 

  • Catalano ran the 400m in 54.80 which placed 18th out of 33 competitors. 

  • Burns and Quwayne Lawrence (New Britain, Conn.) both came away with personal best performances in the Discus. Burns and Lawrence would finish 20th and 28th respectively in the event.

  • Burns and Lawrence were not done as both men competed in the Shot Put where they finished 20th and 32nd respectively. 

  • Freda concluded his busy weekend finishing 31st overall in the 800m.

  • Quomony, Conteh, Mason, and Worrell all ran at their best in the 200m. Quomony led the way with a big personal best of 23.68 seconds. It's his first time breaking the 24 second barrier. The group finished 36th, 38th, 44th, and 47th respectively. Mason also came away with a personal best performance. 

 

UP NEXT FOR THE HAWKS

The Hawks will conclude their regular season in Troy, NY as they head to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) to compete in the Capital District Classic on Saturday April 29th. The competition begins at 11am and will be held at Harkness Field.
