HOUGHTON, N.Y. - The Hartwick Men's Indoor Track and Field Team started their 2024-25 campaign at the Houghton December Classic, hosted by Houghton University.

Hartwick began their afternoon with Devon Spalding being the first Hawk to cross the finish line in the 5000 meter race, posting a finishing mark of 18 minutes and 55 seconds.

Quran Best (Bronx, N.Y.), Patrick Conteh (Salisbury, Md.) and Corey Quomony (Aberdeen, MD.) were solid in the 60 meter event, all posting qualifying times for the Empire 8 Championships. Best led the pack, clocking in at 7.38 seconds, Conteh posted 7.43 seconds and Quomony finished at 7.46 seconds.

Erik Higgins (Buffalo, N.Y.) started his indoor track season on a high note, finishing the mile run in four minutes and 59 seconds. Higgins was strong in the 800 meter, posting a 12th place finish with a time of two minutes and seven seconds.

Benjamin Ballard (Worcester, N.Y.) placed ninth in the 400 meter with a finishing mark of 56.18 seconds in his first collegiate event.

Cody Bazemore (Bel Air, Md.) had a collegiate debut to remember, shattering the 200 meter program record, setting a new record of 23.18 seconds for a fifth place finish, earning an Empire 8 qualifying mark.

Marquis Jones-McKinney (Astoria, N.Y.) posted a score of 1.80 in the high jump, placing fourth and collecting an E8 qualifying mark as well.

Bazemore and Quomony both picked up their second qualifying marks in the long jump event. Bazemore placed third with a score of 6.76, Quomony finished with a score of 6.36.

Cody's score of 6.76 was enough to earn a qualifying mark for the All-Atlantic Region Track and Field Championships (AARTFC), held at Ithaca College on March 7th and 8th.

Shlok Chaurasiya (Belle Mead, N.J.) wrapped up field events for the Hawks, grabbing an E8 qualifying mark with a score of 10.85 in the shot put.

The Hawks kept the momentum up, placing second in the 4x400 as Luca Montesano (Coram, N.Y.), Calvin Higgins (Buffalo, N.Y.), Ballard and E. Higgins combined for a time of three minutes and 48 seconds.

Hartwick capped off the strong showing with the 4x200 event, Will Mensah (Cliffwood, N.J.), Bazemore, Best, and Conteh placed fourth with a time of one minute and 36 seconds.

UP NEXT FOR THE HAWKS
The Hawks will have a break in their schedule before they head to Cornell University to compete in the Southern Tier Invite on January 11th at 11AM.
