TROY, N.Y. – The Hartwick Track & Field team posted strong performances against competition from all three divisions at RPI's Under the Lights Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Cody Bazemore (Bel Air, Md.) and Shane Hunte (Rosedale, N.Y.) represented the Hawks in the seeded 200 meters to open competition Friday. Bazemore placed 10th with a time of 22.08 seconds, while Hunte recorded a collegiate-best 22.27 seconds for 13th place, as both secured spots at the conference championships.
Brynita Haas (Red Creek, N.Y.) picked up four points for the Hawks with a fifth-place finish in the 10,000 meters, crossing in 39:56.78 to qualify for the Empire 8 Championships.
Brody Williams (Alpine, N.Y.) led the Blue and White in the discus with a throw of 36.01 meters (118 feet, 1 inch). Noah Curtis (Clinton Corners, N.Y.) followed closely at 35.99 meters (118 feet, 1 inch), while Jayden Beatty (West Babylon, N.Y.) posted a 34.81-meter mark (114 feet, 2 inches), with all three meeting the conference standard.
Maiya King (Morris, N.Y.) added three points in the women's pole vault with a clearance of 2.10 meters (6 feet, 10¾ inches). Curtis closed day one with a qualifying mark in the javelin, recording a throw of 37.17 meters (121 feet, 11 inches).
Sydney Franza (Ellenville, N.Y.) opened day two in the 100-meter hurdles, clocking 18.85 seconds to earn an Empire 8 qualifying mark. The men's 4x100 relay followed, as Jaiden Deacon (Valley Stream, N.Y.), Bazemore, Patrick Conteh (Salisbury, Md.), and Hunte finished in 42.95 seconds to collect six points.
Bazemore continued his strong showing, winning the 100 meters in 11.23 seconds. Erik Higgins (Buffalo, N.Y.) improved his conference mark in the 800 meters with a time of 2:04.14. Basil Metz (Highland, N.Y.) added two points in the 400-meter hurdles, finishing in 1:03.67.
Deacon and Will Mensah (Cliffwood, N.J.) turned in solid efforts in the unseeded 200 meters, with Deacon placing sixth in 23.30 seconds and Mensah finishing eighth in 23.64 seconds. Julia Weinschreider (Williamson, N.Y.) punched her conference ticket in the 5,000 meters, beating the standard by 22 seconds with a time of 20:38.56.
Curtis recorded a collegiate-best mark in the hammer throw at 38.76 meters (127 feet, 2 inches). Beatty added a new outdoor best in the shot put, qualifying for the Empire 8 Championships with a throw of 12.64 meters (41 feet, 5.75 inches), good for 12th place.
