The Hawks are flying high after returning from #9 Akron with a 2-0 victory last Saturday night.
Kit Tregear (Brighton, England/BHASVIC) scored his first collegiate goal as he tallied on a header in the 65th minute off a pass from
Jack Miller (Commack, NY/Commack).
Chris Walter (Amherst, NY/Nichols School) gave the Hawks some insurance in the 86th minute off a feed from
Marc Russell (Glasgow, Scotland/Woodfarm HS) to seal the win.
Goalkeeper
Mateo Munarriz (Manizales, Colombia/Colegio Granadino), who made 13 saves against the Zips, was named the MAC Player of the Week, the Top Drawer Soccer Player of the Week, and to the College Soccer News Team of the Week.
A win Friday over WVU would make Hartwick 2-0 in the Mid-American Conference with two of the league's top teams in its rear-view mirror. The Mountaineers are battle tested with four games played against teams ranked in the national top 20, including a 5-4 overtime win over defending national champion Indiana. They are winners of two straight since snapping a four-game winless streak.
"Starting the MAC season with back to back games against the top two teams in the conference was always going to be a huge challenge and the game against West Virginia will be another extremely tough test for our team," said Hartwick coach
John Scott. "We're well aware of the caliber that West Virginia possess. They have quality players all over the field and that's going to mean a busy night for us defensively considering Andy Bevin and Majed Osman have produced 11 goals and 11 assists between them. We'll match up as best we can for the game knowing that we'll need to be at our best."

Field Hockey, which has won two straight games, hosts defending Empire 8 champion Utica on Saturday. The Hawks defeated Union 4-2 on the road on Tuesday for their fourth win of the season. The Hartwick offense, which had scored just two goals in the previous four games, came alive with four goals against the Dutchwomen.
Sophomore
Jessica Ott (Katonah, NY/John Jay) was involved in all four of the Hawk tallies as she registered the game-winning goal and assisted on the other three. Senior
Hiliary Carlson (Foxboro, MA/Foxboro) scored twice, sophomore
Kelly Kramer (Royersford, PA/Villa Maria Academy) contributed a goal and an assist, and freshman
Shannon Carter (Falls Church, VA/J.E.B. Stuart) made 15 saves.
The Utica Pioneers are 9-3 overall and 3-1 in the league standings. UC's three losses are to nationally ranked Rochester, Skidmore, and a 4-3 conference loss to Stevens. The Pioneers are the highest scoring team in the Empire 8 with 47 goals in 12 games for an average of nearly four goals per game.
"I believe Utica is the best field hockey team in the conference," stated Hartwick field hockey coach
Anna Meyer. "They have so many quality attackers and defenders and I think they have the best goalkeeper in the conference, as well. We have our work cut out for us for sure, but if we play well and catch a few breaks, anything can happen. We are very excited for the game."

Football (4-0, 1-0 Empire 8)
Sat., Oct. 12 vs. #17 St. John Fisher (4-0, 1-0 Empire 8) – 2 p.m.

For the second straight Saturday, Hartwick takes its unbeaten record into Wright Stadium against another Empire 8 team with nothing but victories under its belt. The Hawks handled Ithaca last weekend, 21-9. This weekend, Fisher comes calling with both the Hawks and Cardinals sporting 4-0 overall records and 1-0 conference marks.
Against the Bombers, the Hartwick defense was the story as it forced five IC turnovers. Sophomore
Dante Crump (Kingston, NY/Kingston) picked off two passes and senior
Joe Seney (Gloversville, NY/Broadalbin-Perth) forced two fumbles. Junior
Jason Brown (Rensselaer, NY/Rensselaer) registered a fumble recovery for a touchdown. Seney would later be named to the D3Football.com National Team of the Week for his efforts. Senior wide receiver
Frankie Molina (Middletown, NY/Middletown), who caught six passes for 90 yards with one touchdown, was tabbed the Empire 8 Offensive Player of the Week.
Hartwick is also garnering national recognition as a team. The Hawks are receiving votes in both the AFCA and D3Football.com polls.
St. John Fisher, ranked 17
th in the AFCA national poll, has had two straight close games after shutting out Otterbein 28-0 and coasting past Washington & Jefferson 42-21 in its first two games of the season. The Cardinals rallied past Cortland 33-25 and battled back in the fourth quarter to escape against Frostburg, 38-35. Against the Bobcats, running back Ryan Kramer racked up 293 all-purpose yards, including 187 on five kick returns.
"We feel great about how we're playing," said Hartwick coach
Mark Carr. "We are playing tough, smart and together. Being 4-0, including a victory over Ithaca College, is a nice start to the season. We have an outstanding, nationally ranked St. John Fisher squad this weekend. We are very excited and preparing diligently for this match up."

Sat., Oct. 12 vs. Stevens (19-4, 6-0) – 1 p.m.

Sat., Oct. 12 @ Houghton (12-5) – 3 p.m.

Volleyball is on a roll having won three straight matches, including Tuesday's 3-2 come-from-behind victory over Oneonta State. The Hawks registered a 2-1 mark at the Empire 8 Crossover last weekend at Elmira and now have a 3-3 record in the league with one game left to play against Stevens in a match played at Houghton. 'Wick also plays the host Highlanders but the match will have no bearing on the Empire 8 standings.
Against the Red Dragons on Tuesday, junior
Dana Martin (Chester, NY/Burke Catholic), sophomore
Hannah Strom (Kenmore, WA/Inglemoor), and freshman
Quincy Kinzel (Scotia, NY/Guilderland) combined for 35 kills and 44 digs to pace the Hawks. Kinzel, who was named Empire 8 Rookie of the Week on Monday, also contributed five kills as did senior
Katie Ryan (Circleville, NY/Pine Bush).
Stevens is currently in first place in the Empire 8 with a perfect 6-0 mark. The Ducks are 19-4 overall and receiving votes in the latest AVCA national poll. Houghton has a very solid 12-5 record. The Highlanders have secured 3-2 wins over both Ithaca and Elmira.
A victory over the Ducks would put Hartwick in great position to earn its first-ever Empire 8 Conference Tournament bid. Even with a loss to the Ducks, the Hawks still would remain alive for one of the four tournament spots but would need favorable results from around the league in two weeks.
