Brett Peterson graduated in 1981 as the most prolific scorer in the history of the field hockey program. She scored 132 points (60 goals, 12 assists) and led the squad to a 45-23-2 record in four seasons from 1977-80.
Peterson, a forward, scored 40 points (18 goals, four assists) for the 1980 team (16-7) that finished second overall in the AIAW Division III National Tournament. Hartwick won the EAIAW Regional Tournament before losing in the second overtime of the national championship game on a penalty stroke. Peterson had two hat tricks (three-goal games) to help Hartwick advance to the championship game of the AIAW National Tournament.
As a junior, she scored 39 points (17 goals, five assists) and led the team to postseason appearances in the national, regional and state tournaments. Peterson tallied 25 points (11 goals, three assists) as a sophomore and scored 28 points (14 goals) as a freshman. All 60 of her goals were scored on natural grass.
Among the school's all-time statistical leaders, Peterson graduated ranked first in career scoring (132 points), first in career goals (60), and second in career assists (12). At the time of induction, she was ranked third in career goals, fifth in career scoring and 10th in points in a season (40 in 1980). Peterson led the team in scoring in three of her four varsity seasons.
