Banks coached football, basketball and baseball at Hartwick between 1941 and 1950, also serving as the school's athletic director at Hartwick.

Banks' 1941 football tie with Lehigh helped put the school on the athletic map. In 1946 and 1947 he posted the first two winning seasons in Hartwick football history. At the time of induction he is the winningest coach in Hartwick football history.

He also furthered the development of the athletic program, hiring future hall-of-famers Hal Bradley and Tom Greene to coach basketball and cross-country, respectively.

Banks had an illustrious athletic career before coming to Hartwick, lettering in four sports at Syracuse University, where he was an Honorable Mention All-American as a quarterback.

He coached football at six different schools, including a five-year stint at the University of Tennessee, posting a career college coaching record of 100-72-9.
