In nine seasons as men's basketball coach at Hartwick, Dr. Roy P. Chipman posted a career record of 167 wins and 52 losses. The Hawks advanced to the NCAA Division II Tournament seven times under Chipman, including five consecutive bids from 1973 to 1977.

Chipman later coached at Lafayette College, where he won two league titles, and then at the University of Pittsburgh, where he coached the team to three NCAA Division I and two NIT tournament berths.

Chipman posted a career college basketball record of 339 wins against 150 losses, for a career winning percentage of .763, which, at the time of induction ranks him among the winningest coaches in any division.

He also served as the athletic director during his tenure at Hartwick.
