Synal is one of the only four-sport letterman in the history of Hartwick College. Though he lost one year of college due to military service in World War II, Synal was the leading ground gainer and scorer for the football team all three years at Hartwick. In 1949 he was an All-Upstate New York selection by the United Press.

He captained the 1948 football team, and started all but two games during his career.

His 108-yard rushing game against Brockport in 1947 still stands among the school's top performances.

While at Hartwick, Synal also played two years of basketball, one year of baseball and captained the golf team for two seasons.

Synal also served as an assistant basketball coach in 1948-49.
