Joe Britton is one of only seven players to receive All-American honors in the history of the men's basketball program at Hartwick College. Britton, a shooting guard, was named to the Basketball Times (second team) and Basketball Gazette (third team) All-America Teams as a senior.
Britton's ability to score from the perimeter helped him earn a reputation as one of the top shooters in the nation. In 1991-92, he was ranked 16th among NCAA Division III players and led the Empire Athletic Association in scoring with 22.9 points per game. Britton received first team all-conference honors and scored over 20 points in 18-of-22 games that season.
He guided Hartwick to three straight ECAC Tournament appearances from 1990-92 and led the team in scoring after his sophomore (17.7 ppg), junior (16.5 ppg), and senior (22.9 ppg) seasons. He scored a career-high 39 points in an 84-82 victory over Elmira College on Jan. 21, 1992.
At the time of induction, Britton was ranked second all-time in career scoring with 1,802 points. He ranked first in single-season points (642 in 1991-92), second in career three-point field goals (209), fifth in career steals (121) and seventh in career blocks (53). In addition, Britton held or shared the school records for highest three-point field goal percentage in a season (.488 in 1989-90) and highest three-point field goal percentage in a game (1.000, 6-for-6 against Muhlenberg on Jan. 5, 1990).
In four seasons from 1988-92, Britton played in all 108 games and helped the squad register a 68-40 record during that span. He averaged 16.3 points and 4.1 rebounds per game while shooting 43.3 percent (209-of-483) from three-point range.
