Dale Rothenberger (Head Men's & Women's Swim and Dive Coach):  A cornerstone of Hartwick College athletics for nearly four decades, Coach Rothenberger has built one of the most successful and enduring legacies in collegiate swimming and diving. Serving as the head coach of both the men's and women's programs since 1985, Rothenberger has guided the Hawks to national prominence through sustained excellence, leadership, and dedication.

With 38 NCAA Championship appearances—22 for the men and 16 for the women—Coach Dale has helped define competitive consistency on a national scale. 

Under his leadership, Hartwick has achieved:

  • 639 total dual-meet wins—the most in program history

    • Men's record: 348-149

    • Women's record: 291-219

  • 6 Empire 8 Conference Championships

    • 1 Allegheny-Empire Conference Championship

  • 3 UNYSCSA Championships

  • 3 ECAC Championships

  • 16 NCAA Top 50 Finishes, including 8 Top 25 finishes

  • 48 All-Americans between the men's and women's teams

  • 1 NCAA National Champion (Susan Torrell, 1990, 100 & 200 Breastroke winner)
     

A decorated coach in his own right, Rothenberger has been recognized as:

  • 5x UNYSCSA Men's Coach of the Year
     

  • 3x UNYSCSA Women's Coach of the Year
     

  • 2x Empire 8 Coach of the Year

 
  • 2023-24 Empire 8 Conference Championship & Allegheny-Empire Championship Coach of the Meet
     

His impact extends far beyond wins and titles— Coach Dale has developed generations of student-athletes who have thrived in the pool, in the classroom, and beyond. His enduring leadership continues to shape the tradition and future of Hartwick swimming and diving.
